Aykhal Ammosov, a leftist activist and punk musician from Yakutia, has been held in Kazakhstan for almost a year on Russia's request. He is detained in strict isolation in a pre-trial detention center, completely cut off from the outside world. His cell has no windows, leading to constant illness and exacerbating his health problems.
Ammosov is known as an anti-war activist who criticizes Russian policy. In Russia, he faces criminal charges for “discrediting the Russian army” (Article 280.3, Part 1 of the Criminal Code) and “justifying terrorism” (Article 205.2, Part 2 of the Criminal Code). These charges could result in up to 10 years in prison.
Kazakhstan detained Ammosov on an extradition request from Russia, where he faces serious risks, including torture and other forms of humiliation.
Ammosov was granted a humanitarian visa to Germany, which would have provided him with legal protection there. However, due to prolonged bureaucratic delays, he did not receive it in time and was forced to end up in a Kazakhstan prison.
To save Aykhal Ammosov from imminent tragedy, it is crucial to raise awareness of his case in Western media. Only through collective efforts and high levels of international solidarity can we influence his situation and prevent a disaster.
