Twitter and Mastodon/Kolektiva

A comrade from Libertaire.net got this message from someone involved in a well-known anarchist website

Do you know if this new platform has a Mastodon or Twitter account? It would be great (and relatively easy) to set up a bot that just auto-posted content as it came in. Maybe they could set up an account on kolektiva.social?
Someone asked me about this today, so I figured I'd pass on the question to you.

This is a great suggestion, but I just want to make sure there is a consensus among the collective regarding social medias. For example, the community on Libertaire.net and Pirate-Punk.net voted against (twice) having a Facebook page. Some are more hostile against social medias than others so it really depends on the collective case-by-case.

Obviously there is not any issue with supporting Mastodon and Kolektiva (just have to find a way to auto-post). But what about Twitter and Facebook and Instagram? I'd say fuck zuckerbook considering they recently banned It's Going Down, Crimethinc and others. Fuck Instagram too because they banned some of our accounts just for posting antifa stuff.

Twitter is much better, but it's still a capitalist multinational traded on the stock market. But censorship is not really an issue, at least for now. I have also noticed that most of the well-known anarchist collectives already have a Twitter account, so I don't think it would be unconventional for this platform to also have a presence on Twitter.

Any opinions?

Ok so we tried to set up auto-posting from WordPress to Twitter using Jetpack Publish. But the plugin is shit, it tweets the link without embedding the Twitter card.

The only solution I see for now is making our own plugin to post on Twitter using Buffer API. There's going to be a lot of work involved, we need to build an index of the WordPress post and mark the ones which were already tweeted.

We also need to fix the twitter card HTML meta tag, because if the featured image from the post is not corresponding to twitter card image format (1024x512) then the preview of the post won't be displayed. We also need a fallback to the default og:image if the article doesn't have a featured image.

Going to be a bit more complicated than expected...

Last week, our friends from Submedia suggested us to open an account on the Kolektiva server of Mastodon, an alternative & non-corporate social media.

It was a lot of trouble to figure out how to auto-post to Mastodon.

First, we tried with the WordPress plugin, but it works only for posts published from the WP Admin interface. We only use the frontend part of WP, our posts are inserted into WP using our custom PHP script with function wp_insert_post() so it's not supported by the Mastodon auto-post plugin.

So we ended up using our own PHP auto-poster, mostly based on this open-source code on GitHub: https://github.com/groundcat/mastodon-rss-bot
Basically, it gets the posts from the RSS feed and then auto post it on Kolektiva using Mastodon API. Then we set up a crontab to run it every 5 minutes
